TVXQ’s Changmin to join Kang Ho Dong as a fixed MC for an upcoming KBS variety show

TVXQ‘s Changmin will be partnering up with MC Kang Ho Dong for a new KBS variety show!

The variety show will mark Kang Ho Dong’s official comeback to KBS as well as Changmin’s first experience as a fixed MC. Since his debut with TVXQ nine years ago, Changmin has maintained his focus as a singer until now.

That’s all about to change with the New Year, as it’s been revealed by a KBS PD that the two are working on a new show slated to be released mid-January. SM Entertainment confirmed on the morning of December 24th, “Changmin will be joining Kang Ho Dong’s KBS variety show.”

The content of the show, however, will be kept in top secrecy. “Even within our company, only a portion of the staff now. We’re keeping the entire thing under wraps.”

Although this will be his first variety outing, he’s well known among the SM crowd for being the wittiest out of all of the artists. Check back for more updates!

News updates from Varietyland

Varietyland was teeming with news the last few days, so I thought it’d be worth waiting till the dust settled and summing up some news, rumors, and developments that have been going on. First: Star variety PD Na Young-seok (or Na PD, Evil Genius Extraordinaire) of the original 1 Night 2 Days, has been developing a new show for KBS, which sent everyone’s speculation meters running wild.

Rumors that he’d reteam with Kang Ho-dong or Lee Seung-gi came from every direction, but in the end, neither proved to be true. *sadface* But Na PD has announced his new show, and meanwhile both Ho-dong and Seung-gi are reportedly in talks to headline new variety shows as well, but each separately. Guys, what do we have to do to get the band back together here?

After taking a year-long hiatus from the biz, Kang Ho-dong is finally back in action. Yay! He has returned to SBS’s Star King and MBC’s Knee Drop Guru, and is reportedly developing a brand new show for KBS. Fans held out hope he might join the second season of 1 Night 2 Days, but I agree with the concerns of Season 2′s PDs that it would send the new cast off-balance, after they’ve just now started to find their groove. The first season of that show will always be my favorite, but I think it’s worth giving the second season its own identity. No specifics yet on what Kang Ho-dong’s new show for KBS will be.

Then news broke that Go Hyun-jung’s talk-variety show Go Show is going to be cancelled, after only six months on the air. It’s an SBS show on Friday nights, and despite the high-profile name and strong veteran co-hosts, I’m not surprised the show isn’t doing well. I never liked or understood the point of the format — a mock casting session — and Go Hyun-jung is an amazing actress, but her variety self leaves me cold. The show hit a high of 10.5% ratings, but has eventually dipped to the 5% range as of late, and will be getting the axe by December.

So then follows the natural question: What will replace Go Show? And then another series of stories sprang up, reporting that Lee Seung-gi is in talks to headline a new variety show for SBS, to fill that time slot. But that’s a story firmly in hedging, “considering, unconfirmed” territory, so I would take it with a grain of salt. There’s also another rumor that the slot will go to a new show MC’d by Shin Dong-yup and Yoon Jong-shin. I say let them have the Friday night slot, and jump on Ho-dong-ie hyung’s new show!

And finally, here’s one thing that IS confirmed: Na PD revealed his new variety show for KBS, called The Human Condition. Hahaha, I don’t know if it’s supposed to be an ironic existential-problem-reduced-to-variety title, but all I see is Na PD giving a group of boys the bare minimum of things to survive in the wild, and then smiling, “It’s The Human Condition, Badumching!”

It stars a quartet of some of Gag Concert’s hottest stars: Kim Joon-hyun (top left), Kim Joon-ho (top right), Heo Kyung-hwan (bottom left), and Yang Sang-gook (bottom right). At least we know cast chemistry won’t be a problem with a foursome of comedians who work together all the time… just as long they don’t try too hard to out-funny each other, and as long as somebody remembers to MC the thing.

The show’s concept is pretty literal when it comes to the title — they’re going to focus on one “necessary human condition” each week… and take it away from the boys. Mwahahahahaha. Why is Na PD such an evil mastermind? I don’t know how barebones it goes, because are we talking about food and water, or comforts of modern living like cell phones and ATM cards? Do we have to watch them live without showers? Or starve to death on a deserted island if they can’t catch their own food? I’m not even sure which would be funnier, but I can’t wait to find out.

The Human Condition premieres in November.

Joo Won says, “1 Night 2 Days gives me freedom”

Actor Joo Won recently said he will do his best as the youngest member of KBS 2TV’s Happy Sunday – 1 Night 2 Days.

On September 17, Joo Won said, “It’s been a little bit tiring because I had to shoot 1 Night 2 Days with the drama series Bridal Mask, but it gives me energy now. It gives me freedom from the busy life I have.”

He also said, “When I was shooting Bridal Mask, I shot 1 Night 2 Days once in every two weeks, and I really enjoyed. I could laugh, visit good places, and eat delicious food all day long. I could concentrate more on the drama shooting after that.”

Regarding his role as the youngest member on the show, Joo Won said, “I don’t feel burdened by appearing on 1 Night 2 Days, but I feel burdened by the character I’m playing on the show. I was worried a lot at first because I couldn’t do as well as other members. I’m still worried, but I’m just trying to enjoy now.”

Joo Won also said he’s very much satisfied with his relationship with other members. He said, “Except for Uhm Tae Woong, I met all other members on this show for the first time, but I’m now close to all members, including Kim Seung Woo and Cha Tae Hyun. I felt nervous in front of them at first, but I realized they were very open-minded as time went by. When they adore me, I get excited. We’re getting closer to each other like that.”

Regarding the show, Joo Won said, “I don’t think I can ever get a chance to travel around the country like this with six other men. I’m really having good experiences, eating local food and seeing cultural properties. 1 Night 2 Days is a show that helps me a lot.”

Joo Won also said, “All members bought dinner after the season two of this show started, but I haven’t because I always had to leave early for the shooting of Bridal Mask. The drama series is now over, so I’ll buy other members dinner.”

”The age range of my fans has broadened so it feels like I’ve suddenly become an idol. Now, even young kids aged 3 or 4 run away from me.”

Drama Gaksital, which ended on 6th September, allowed Joo Won to prove his immense popularity.

When news of the commencement of auditions for Gaksital first broke, the audience said “Oh…how will this end? It’s hard to say.”

Joo Won, had earlier appeared in KBS 2′s Baker King and Ojakyo Brothers and had given all he had to his roles but Gaksital was the first time Joo Won would take on the lead role.

“When I first got the script for Gaksital, I didn’t hesitate at all. I decided to take up the role because I felt that this was an outstanding production. Also, to an actor who is still improving, this drama would be one beneficial to helping me hone my skills. That was all. I never considered anything else.”

Nevertheless, in the first ratings battle between Gaksital, top star headed Ghost and MBC’s I do I do, Gaksital won the race and maintained top spot. Due to the fact that the drama was about a hero in the era of the Japanese Occupation, Joo Won received the nickname “Patriotic Actor”.

“I am still not able to live up to the title ‘Patriotic Actor’. It’s not just me, the other actors all deserve to be called so. this nickname came too suddenly and I never imagined it would happen. ‘Rating Man’ is also a nickname that gave me a huge burden. Thankfully, I’ve always prepared myself for the ratings. Maybe next time I’ll be second or maybe the audience won’t know if I’m in a drama or not and the ratings could drop.”

From start to end, Gaksital was able to maintain its top spot and ended beautifully with a ratings high of 22.9%. The ending of the drama is still a hot topic. Mok Dan, whom Gaksital loved deeply, and Shunji, Gaksital’s ex-best friend, both died. the Dong Jin death troop soldiers and the student that survived the Imperial Police massacre joined civilians on the streets of Kyung Sung and participated in the mansei movement. Although we don’t get to see if the movement was successful, that scene still managed to touch the hearts of many.

“Although everyone sacrificed, and it felt very unfortunate, but the last scene was very cool. The only thing that I felt regretful about was that when we were filming the last scene, there was a huge downpour. We had to wait for the rain to stop before we could start filming but it was a flawless, awesome scene. Regardless of whether Gaksital died or not or despite the fact that it didn’t appear grand, even more people put on the mask and participated in movement in support of the independence movement. Perhaps at first everything felt so surreal but it was a scene that left a deep impression.”

Gaksital brought many things to this actor who has only debuted for 3 years. Joo Won said “Not only did I prepare before filming started, during filming, I thought a lot about my country and the pain of the people. I made use of the realisations I got through studying and put it into my acting. I put in a lot of hard work. Through studying history, I got to understand the pain of the people and their love for their country.”The age range of my fans has broadened so it feels like I’ve suddenly become an idol. But that is not the end for Joo Won.

“I’ve learnt a lot with regard to acting and I have also learnt how to express my opinion. When I was acting out Kangto, the director’s opinion is important but I have also learnt to express my own thoughts and confidence. It’s my first time taking on a lead role so even if I was not especially good, but there were times when I thought “Ah, so I could do it too.”. I would tell myself “You did well for your first try.” Also, I have learnt how to lead the staff and other actors as a lead actor.:

Just like that, Joo Won has climbed the next step of his acting career with Gaksital. When he first debuted, everyone was calling him Kang Dong Won Jr, Gu Ma Jun and other nicknames but now, it has become “Although he is still young, he is someone with very good acting skills.”

Finally, we asked Joo Won if he would take part in a Gaksital sequel if one was ever planned. Joo won said ok without hesitation at all.

“If there really is a Gaksital sequel, I want to be part of it again because there are very few dramas in Korea that have many seasons. But Park Ki Woong hyung and Ji Se Yeon and other actors have died so that’s going to be very sad.

But that is not the end for Joo Won.

Actor Joo Won Felt a Huge Responsibility Over ‘Bridal Mask’ Ratings and Was Afraid of Its Competitor ‘Ghost’

Appearing in the highly popular Bridal Mask, being the lead actor, Joo Won shouldered a huge responsibility to draw high viewership ratings. Taking 1st position on Wednesday and Thursday, in Bridal Mask, Joo Won plays Lee Kangto, suavely becoming the Korean hero.

Debuting in Baker King in 2009,  going on to Ojakgyo Brothers and now to Bridal Mask, striking thrice, steadily become a guarantee ticket to viewership success. People in the industry and the audience all feel that as long as Joo Won acts, there is no need to worry about viewership ratings. It gained a lot of trust from people.

Regarding this, on the 17th interview with Osen, Joo Won expressed that “In fact the burden of being responsible for viewership is very heavy. I was afraid of competitors like “Ghost”. Although the production does not rely on me alone, being the lead actor, no matter what I spend a lot of thinking that teachers and soonbaes are good, script is also very good, if this production does not turn out well, it’s all my fault, I have this pressure.”

“Due to this stress, on the morning of the following day of broadcast, unknown to myself, I was riveted  on the ratings results. During the filming, production staff and actors always tell me to keep fighting and work hard. My time on screen was a lot and honestly because we had to do ongoing filming, I suffered a lot in terms of acting. But I always think that I have the heart to want to make this production well, on the filming set, I always joked and chat, working hard to create the atmosphere during filming.”

Joo Won expressed “This production has taught me the correct attitude of being the main actor. No matter how difficult, I must not fall and give up. In Bridal Mask, be it the actors or the production staff, everyone in the team all cooperated excellently, it has also helped me a lot…that’s how it got me to preserver and finish this production.”

After the Bridal Mask ends, filled with CFs, media and magazines reviews, there does not seem to have time for rest. Becoming a one top actor, dramas and movies offers are all flowing in
