Jo In Sung Fails to be “Pickled” Enough for Guest Spot on “1 Night, 2 Days”

922 jo in sung stills

On the most recent episode of KBS’s “1 Night 2 Days,” they had a “best friends” special (also known as the “pickled friends” special due to a pun in the Korean pronunciation).

The members’ mission for this episode was to cast friends who were “pickled” in their daily lives (friends who needed a break and needed to get out more). All of the members were given casting compensations to give to their friends who agreed to come. Cha Tae Hyun tried calling Kim Jong Kook and Lee Kwang Soo but were unable to reach them. He was then seen calling someone, who later turned out to be none other than Jo In Sung. Jo In Sung answered the phone at nine in the morning, and to this Cha Tae Hyun asked, “Shouldn’t you be passed out?” He had expected Jo In Sung to be passed out from drinking during the wrap-up party of “It’s Okay, It’s Love” from the night before.

Worrying that Jo In Sung’s current state would be too normal, Cha Tae Hyun changed his target to Uhm Tae Woong. But when Uhm Tae Woong had another schedule, Cha Tae Hyun had no other choice but to meet up with Jo In Sung, who had stated that he didn’t have anything to do that day. When they met up in Itaewon, they greeted each other warmly and viewers could sense that they had a close friendship. Despite the early time, Jo In Sung showed up bright and radiating. Though he revealed that he didn’t even have his makeup on, the setting seemed brighter with his presence.

As Cha Tae Hyun explained the special’s concept, he also offered actor Kim Ki Bang, who was with Jo In Sung, to join in on the trip as well. Jo In Sung could not decline the offer, as he did not have any schedule the day after to serve as an excuse. Eventually Jo In Sung accepted the offer to join the trip. What started out to be a joking call ended up really having Jo In Sung on the show. You could view the conversation here.

“1N2D” Season 2 Bids a Tearful Farewell and Releases Teaser for Season 3

1N2D

The time has come to say good bye to the members of “1N2D” Season 2 as the show wrapped up its last episode. The closing statements were filled with tears, hugs, thankfulness, and a trip down memory lane.

On November 24, KBS’ variety program “1N2D” officially wrapped up season two with a final goodbye from the members. Similar to the show’s signature opening in which the members gather together to introduce the episode, it was fitting to see the members gather one last time to bid farewell to its audience.

The closing statements revealed how the cast and crew of “1N2D” had formed a bond similar to that of a family. Oldest member Yoo Hae Jin expressed, “It has been eight months (since I joined) and the experiences have been wonderful. I now have great younger friends. I’m thankful to the younger friends for their help, and all the staff have worked very hard.”

When listening to Yoo Hae Jin’s comment, Uhm Tae Woong couldn’t help but explode in tears even before his turn. The actor stated, “I want to thank everyone because I feel that I have received an overflow of love, and I will never forget. Everyone, please quickly forget about me and anticipate the new ‘1N2D.’”

1N2D

Cha Tae Hyun, who plans to return for season three, said, “Choi Jae Hyung PD comes to mind, as well as Seung Woo hyung (Lee Seung Woo). Please anticipate season three.” Singer Sung Shi Kyung also added his sentiments when he said, “I started the show after being touched when I experienced the ‘viewer tour.’ The program is a show that you oddly grow affectionate towards. Season three will start, but I think ‘1N2D’ is the best program as a KBS weekend variety show.”

1N2D

Having been with the show since its first broadcast in August 2007, Kim Jong Min, who also plans to return for season three, couldn’t help the tears as he stated, “I first came here in my mid 20’s. Thinking about it, I think I really love ‘1N2D.’ However, there is something I love more than ‘1N2D,’ and that’s Soo Geun hyung. “

In response, Lee Soo Geun, another original member since the show’s first broadcast, gave a 90 degree bow and expressed in his tearful farewell, “Although my body may not be present, my heart will always be here shouting and being together with you.”

“1N2D” first aired six years ago on August 5, 2007 with members Kang Ho Dong, Noh Hong Chul, Eun Ji Won, Lee Soo Geun, and Kim Jong Min. However, the show reached its highest popularity with members Kang Ho Dong, Eun Ji Won, Lee Soo Geun, MC Mong, Lee Seung Gi, Kim C, and Kim Jong Min. Season two of “1N2D” first aired on March 4, 2012 with members Lee Soo Geun, Kim Jong Min, Uhm Tae Woong, Cha Tae Hyun, Kim Seung Woo, Sung Shi Kyung, and Joo Won.  Along with the changing members of the show, “1N2D” will also experience a change in production team as season three is expected to be produced under a different producer and staff team.

1N2D

Season three of “1N2D” will consist of returning members Cha Tae Hyun and Kim Jong Min, as well as new members Kim Joon Ho, Kim Joo Hyuk, Jung Joon Young, and Defcon. The new teaser for season three shows a unique approach to the show as the new members express their honesty in their lack of confidence to be funny. The different approach of season three has stirred anticipation as many have become curious of the chemistry between the members who form such an unlikely group.  “1N2D” season three will air its first episode on December 1 at 4:55pm (KST).

Uhm Tae-woong confirms JTBC romance drama

Cable network JTBC’s new Monday-Tuesday drama Mom Needs a Man has a new title and a leading man. The new project from PD Kim Yoon-chul (of Can We Get Married and My Name Is Kim Sam-soon) will now be called the more generic Could We Love. I’m a little bummed because Mom Needs a Man is the more evocative title, but perhaps the PD really wants a series of Coulda Would Shoulda dramas to be his thing.

The drama will star a trio of women all facing forty, each with a different romantic situation a la I Need Romance. Jin Jae-young (My Sweet Seoul) plays a “gold miss” character, who’s happy as the perennial single girl. Choi Jung-yoon (Ojakkyo Brothers) is the housewife and mother (to Jin Ji-hee), while Eugene (Hundred Year Inheritance) is being courted to play a divorcee.

Uhm Tae-woong will star as a film director who lived abroad in the States and was already making waves with short films he made as a high-schooler. He eventually becomes a famous movie director who wins awards at Cannes. He’s described as a prickly perfectionist with a constant stoic expression that’s unreadable, though he’s said to be full of charisma on set. He has a painful past (of course) and has no memory of the mother who abandoned him as a child.

I think he’ll most likely have a loveline with Eugene (if she signs on), because his character ends up working with a new screenwriter who comes out of nowhere, and she’ll be struggling with the recent discovery that her ex-husband is marrying someone much younger than her.

Uhm Tae-woong has already had quite the busy season, having just come off of fusion sageuk Sword and Flower and showbiz movie Top Star. He recently quit variety show 1 Night 2 Days, clearing his slate for all dramas, all the time. Well that’s the hope anyway.

Could We Love follows Your Neighbor’s Wife and premieres December 23.

Uhm Tae Woong Fills Void Left by Joo Won on “1N2D”

Uhm Tae Woong Fills Void Left by Joo Won on “1N2D”

Variety program “1N2D” recently filmed in Cheongsong, Gyeongsang Province on October 25 and 26. This particular episode of “1N2D” is meaningful as it is the first filming session in one year and eight months without the cast’s maknae, Joo Won, assisting his hyungnims.

Resident clown and caretaker of the hyungs, Joo Won’s departure will no doubt result in a shift in mood for the show. However, this change is just the beginning.

According to a representative, Yoo Hae Jin, Uhm Tae Woong, Cha Tae Hyun, Lee Su Geun, Sung Shi Kyung and Kim Jong Min all gave it their best filming this episode to try to fill the void left by Joo Won. Beginning with “Genius gugak player” Song So Hee’s folk song performance, the members unified and undertook the “bokbulbok” (chance) game.

“Uhmforce” Uhm Tae Woong, especially, played an active role. Uhm Tae Woong earned his nickname “Uhmforce” from his overflowing charisma in his drama and movie roles. However, in the initial stages after joining “1N2D”, he didn’t say much and his presence was barely noticeable. But at one point, he began attacking the other members’ weaknesses, managing to deal out a Keyser Soze role reversal, and attracting the eyes of viewers.

Lately, Uhm Tae Woong seems to be at his peak in the variety game. Like the saying that the late wind is terrifying, Uhm Tae Woong managed to stand out in all of the games, and deftly handled whatever conversation was thrown at him by the members, drawing laughs for his unique way of speaking.

After Joo Won stepped down from the show, producer PD Lee Se Hee was asked on prospects for the future, and he stated, “I have high hopes from Uhm Tae Woong. Lately, his variety sense seems to be at a peak.”

A production insider had this to say, “As expected, Uhm Tae Woong,” “Joo Won’s absence could be felt, but Uhm Tae Woong really took the lead in setting the mood. The members got along well, and the special brotherly love belonging only to ’1N2D’ could be felt.”

Uhm Tae-woong caves to the dark side of showbiz in Top Star

Among the many films that are currently debuting at the Busan International Film Festival, Top Star seems to be getting a lot of fanfare and positive reviews. The trailer and stills show a much darker story than I had anticipated, about a top star’s manager who dreams of becoming an actor, and grows dangerously ambitious after one taste of fame. It’s basically All About Eve the male version, and it looks like a dark twisty portrayal of celebrity and showbiz.

The casting’s always a head-spinner in these movie-about-movies projects, because of course you cast the bigger star in real life as the underling in the movie. So Uhm Tae-woong (Sword and Flower) headlines as the lowly manager with a lifelong unfulfilled dream of becoming an actor, and Kim Min-joon (Romance Town) plays the top star he and everyone else in the country idolizes. So Yi-hyun (Who Are You) plays a drama producer and Kim Min-joon’s girlfriend.

Uhm Tae-woong’s big break comes one night when Kim Min-joon causes a car accident on a rainy night, and manager Uhm Tae-woong steps up to take responsibility in his place. In exchange, the big star gives him a small role in an upcoming project, and Uhm Tae-woong’s star begins to rise. It eventually reveals a frightening ambition to overtake the top star’s status, but also to have everything that was his, including the girlfriend. Once Kim Min-joon realizes what he could lose (because his ex-manager knows the truth about the accident), he’ll stop at nothing to protect himself. Yeesh, I’m not sure which one is the scarier of the two.

The film is the directorial debut of actor Park Joong-hoon (Arrest King, Haeundae), who also penned the script. Hell, if anyone should know what life as a top star is like, it’s the guy who’s headlined movies since the mid-eighties. Though I sincerely hope this isn’t a ripped-from-the-pages-of-my-diary kind of thing, because, uh, scary. Park Joong-hoon does a lot of comedies, so it’s a bit of a surprise that his first outing as a director is so dark, but I’m definitely intrigued by the insider look at the glitz and glam (and seedy underbelly) of show business.

Top Star opens in theaters October 24.

KBS reveals ‘1N2D’ cast will continue as six members after Joo Won’s leave

Loyal viewers of ‘1N2D‘ (‘1 Night 2 Days‘) were sad upon hearing the news of Joo Won leaving the show and KBS responded that they will not add a new member to replace the young actor.

KBS announced, “Following Joo Won’s leave, [the ‘1N2D’ cast] will continue as six members. There will be no replacement member.”

“Even after a member’s leave, ‘1N2D’ has never added another member for the sake of replacing him. Considering that the current members’ teamwork is at its peak, adding a replacement member might disrupt the teamwork, so in consideration of that, we decided not to add a new member.”

Joo Won will say his farewells during his final filming on October 11-12.

Han Ga-in Not Enough for Um Tae-Woong, Boasts Connection with Suzi

Um Tae-woong Boasts Acquaintance with Suzi

In the latest episode of KBS 2TV’s <Happy Sunday: 1 Night 2 Days> which aired September 29th, the members continued experiencing college life first hand while visiting universities around the nation such as KAIST, Kyung-buk University and Jeon-nam University.
In the episode, Um Tae-woong and Cha Tae-hyun visited KAIST and joined an after-game dinner for the soccer club. They ate pork belly with the students and participated in a win-or-lose game with them. The students brought up Um Tae-woong’s phone conversation with Han Ga-in who was in Turkey at the time, which made him feel proud of his connections with the beautiful actress.
Um Tae-woong also added, “I also call Suzi once in a while, boasting of his acquaintances”, while Cha Tae-hyun couldn’t hide his envy saying, “I want to be close to Suzi, too”!
Um Tae-woong and Cha Tae-hyun also competed against KAIST students in a mental calculation battle with drinking fish sauce as the penalty. The two actors were shocked to see that the students were just multiplying two digit numbers in their heads while the two needed pencil and paper.
In the episode, Cha Tae-hyun also revealed how he fell head over heals with his wife.
